Reexamining the 1960s:
Media, Politics, Culture Conference
November 6-7, 2015 Texas Christian University
***** Call for Papers (Proposals due August 1, 2015) *****
We invite presentation proposals for the Reexamining the 1960s: Media, Politics, Culture Conference, to be held at Texas Christian University (Fort Worth, Texas) November 6-7, 2015.
The conference organizers are seeking historically and theoretically intriguing presentations that explore any noteworthy aspect(s) of media, politics, and/or culture during the 1960s, whether in the United States or elsewhere. This gathering promises to provide an intellectually stimulating investigation into the complex phenomenon that was “The Sixties.” Accordingly, participants are encouraged to interpret the conference theme quite broadly and innovatively.
Possible topics may include (but are certainly not limited to) Allen Ginsberg, art cinema, Batman, The Beatles, Betty Friedan, The Beverly Hillbillies, Bewitched, Black Power Movement, Bob Dylan, Bonnie and Clyde, British Invasion, civil disobedience, Civil Rights Movement, counterculture, Cuban Missile Crisis, Easy Rider, The Ed Sullivan Show, fashion, The Feminine Mystique, The Flintstones, free love, The Graduate, hippies, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Midnight Cowboy, music, Peyton Place, politics of violence, psychedelic drugs, Psycho, racism, The Rolling Stones, second-wave feminism, sexism, sexual revolution, space race, Star Trek, Stonewall riots, Vietnam War, and Woodstock Festival.
We encourage submissions from scholars, educators, students, and filmmakers/videographers at all levels, and from disciplines including art, communication, cultural studies, film and video studies, history, journalism, LGBT studies, literature, media studies, music, political science, popular culture, sociology, television studies, and women’s studies, among others.
Individual paper presentations will be limited to 20 minutes in length. We also invite submissions of relevant media offerings (of any length, in DVD format) for screening and discussion at the conference.
Given adequate participant interest and high-quality submissions, we are hoping to publish selected papers (with author’s permission) in a special collection of essays pertaining to the conference theme.
Please e-mail presentation proposals containing (a) a one-page abstract with complete contact information (name, institutional affiliation, postal and e-mail addresses, contact telephone number) and (b) a one-paragraph author biography to Professor Kylo-Patrick Hart ([email protected]) on or before Saturday, August 1, 2015.
Decisions regarding the status of submitted proposals will be made and communicated as quickly as possible following the submission deadline, and certainly no later than August 15, 2015. For specific inquiries prior to submitting a proposal, please contact Dr. Hart at your convenience by e-mail ([email protected]).
